Bidding documents show that VIA Metropolitan Transit plans to add a solar power system to the design of its a new transit hub coming to San Antonio’s South Side.
Bidding documents obtained by the Business Journal show that the San Antonio-based public transit system plans to include a minimum of 60-kilowatts of solar power at its Brooks Transit Center.
More than four years in the works, the transit will be built off the northwest corner of South New Braunfels Avenue and Sidney Brooks.
General contracting bids for the construction project are due at 2 p.m. Oct. 12 with construction scheduled to begin by the end of the year. The center is scheduled to be operational by early 2019.
The transit center will serve eight bus routes, including a new Primo route along Military Drive to VIA’s Kel-Lac Transit Center.
Plans show that an air-conditioned waiting space, seating, restrooms, next-bus arrival information, ticket vending machines, bicycle racks, parking and public artwork are among the planned amenities.
The center will use solar power and other sustainable development features. Bidding documents show that the solar power system must generate a minimum of 60 kilowatts of electricity. Solar power installers will be considered as a subcontractor under the general contractor.
