Good news, South Siders: Brisket is Brooks bound.
April Carter and Guillermo Galvan, who opened the Southern-inspired Hoppin’ John at the bottom of The Vistana building downtown this May, will follow that act with opening Market Barbeque at 2707 SE Military near the Brooks development before the end of the year.
Carter and Galvan launched Market Barbeque in 2015, operating in Laredo and McAllen. They have since sold the Laredo property to a franchisee and closed the McAllen location to relocate to San Antonio.
Before it closed, the McAllen restaurant earned positive marks from Texas Monthly for its hickory smoked brisket, pork ribs and large crust-coated beef ribs. In July, Express-News dining critic Mike Sutter wrote a zero-star review of Hoppin’ John.
