(SAN ANTONIO) – Brooks has completed its first project as a San Antonio innovation zone, installing public Wi-Fi throughout its newly unveiled park—The Greenline. As of August 2018, Greenline visitors will enjoy free Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the 43-acre linear park.

“We’re thrilled to have completed this first step in providing greater connectivity for our campus,” Brooks President and CEO Leo Gomez said. “Being an innovation zone allows us to bring some of the latest technological advancements to our campus and our community. This Wi-Fi network will continue to expand, increasing Internet accessibility and creating a model for what can be possible throughout our city.”

Brooks was recently selected as one of three initial innovation zones for San Antonio’s Smart SA initiative. As an innovation zone, Brooks will serve as a proving ground for new and emerging technologies that, if deemed successful, will be implemented in other parts of the city or citywide. The key innovations at Brooks will address public Wi-Fi access, innovative drainage systems, logistics and public transportation.

“Brooks mixed-use community model makes it an ideal location to pioneer this innovation zone concept,” San Antonio Chief Innovation Officer Jose De La Cruz said. “The zones represent the next phase in our overall smart city strategy, moving the program forward for the benefit of the entire city.”

In planning for future growth and development, the mixed-use campus has an available 20 mile underground duct bank system throughout its 1,300-acre footprint. The duct banks – or groups of conduits that protect and consolidate wiring – will provide greater ease of connectivity across campus while making future construction simpler by centrally locating wiring for new buildings.

Innovation zones were chosen from the 13 regional centers identified in SA Tomorrow, the City of San Antonio’s comprehensive plan. Several criteria, including availability of assets and infrastructure, were used in the selection process. Brooks’ status as a mixed-use community where people can live, work, learn, play and stay as well as its position as an up-and-coming neighborhood played a key role in its selection.
