SAN ANTONIO – Brooks City Base Board of Directors has approved plans to build a 2,500 square foot spay and neuter clinic near the intersection of Goliad Road and City Base Landing that will be operated by the City of San Antonio Animal Care Services Department. Initial plans call for Animal Care Services to retain an independent veterinarian to operate the facility and to provide low-cost spay and neuter services for San Antonio residents. It will agree to pay Brooks City Base an annual rent of $10 dollars and a Common Area Maintenance fee to use the facility.
“The vision for Brooks City Base is a vibrant, mixed-use community that transforms the surrounding area,” said Brooks City Base President & CEO Leo Gomez. “We are doing that by attracting new jobs, improving the infrastructure, building new places to live, learn, work and play. We will also do that by tackling some of our community’s biggest challenges head-on and one of those is our stray animal population. By working with the City to build and operate an accessible, modern clinic, I am hopeful more residents will see the benefits of spaying and neutering their pets.”
A final development agreement is pending, however Brooks intends to use a building design similar to the clinic located on Tuleta Drive, near the San Antonio Zoo. It will include rooms for reception, examination, preparation, surgery, and recovery. The City of San Antonio will be responsible for providing all equipment related to the veterinary services, such as cages, surgical tables, surgical lights, and all exterior improvements like a dog run, signage and fencing.
“Reducing the stray animal population and making our shelters no-kill are high priorities for me personally,” said District 3 City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran. “I am proud to have worked with our partners and we will now have a quality facility in District 3 to provide these services. I am grateful to Brooks and to the ACS staff for working together to make this a reality.”
