Construction is currently underway on the Brooks Transit Center – a venture by VIA Metropolitan Transit that will increase connectivity to and from the rapidly expanding mixed-use community. Located off the northwest corner of South New Braunfels Avenue and Sidney Brooks, the 4,300 square foot facility will combine sustainable development features with modern passenger amenities and public art. Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without over exploitation of natural resources or negative environmental impact.

“With more than 3,000 people living and working here at Brooks, connections are the name of the game,” said Brooks President and CEO Leo Gomez. “The Brooks Transit Center will be the transit hub of the South Side, providing improved connectivity for our campus and surrounding community as we continue to expand and attract new businesses and residents to this growing part of San Antonio.”

The VIA Brooks Transit Center will feature convenient, high-frequency bus service along eight bus routes, including an Express route to downtown San Antonio and a new Primo route along Military Drive to VIA’s Kel-Lac Transit Center. With construction completion set for spring 2019, new Primo service is scheduled to begin in
May.

“The VIA Brooks Transit Center is part of our continuing evolution as we continue to promote transit-oriented communities that help drive economic development,” said VIA President and CEO Jeffrey Ardnt.

In addition to landscaping features around the facility that assist in the filtration of stormwater to protect area water quality, the Brooks Transit Center’s roof will be lined with solar panels manufactured on the Brooks campus
by Mission Solar Energy. The panels will be innovation zone quality, generating a minimum of 60 kilowatts of electricity to supply between 33 and 40 percent of the energy needed to operate the facility.

Passenger amenities include free parking, air-conditioned waiting space, interior and exterior seating, a ticket vending machine and free Wi-Fi. Design features, including an on-site public art installation by local ceramics master Diana Kersey, will capture the culture and authenticity of the South Side community.
