SAN ANTONIO — Local pet owners who’ve struggled to find veterinary care in the City’s Southside now have a new resource at Brooks City Base. The newly built public clinic, off City Base Landing, hosted a soft opening today with a flurry of heart shaped confetti and a “pets are family” theme.

The clinic will offer both low cost spay neuter and wellness services for local pet owners. The pet health facility was born out of a partnership between the District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, Animal Care Services, Brooks City Base, and the San Antonio Humane Society, who will oversee the facility.

The state of the art clinic will feature multiple examination areas, dual spay neuter operation tables and separate dog and cat housing as well as a fenced “doggie relief station” for clinic clients.

Councilwoman Viagran identified the need for the clinic as part of her efforts to combat the Southside’s roaming dog problem and led the City Council approval process for the establishment of the facility at Brooks, last year.

“This new clinic is a huge part of our ongoing work to address our stray animal population in a bigger, more comprehensive way than ever before,” said Councilwoman Viagran. “By reducing the barrier for pet owners to get their pets spayed or neutered, we can take on the problem at its source.”

Brooks President & CEO Leo Gomez echoes the importance of bringing additional community resources to the City’s Southside.

“We want our two-legged and four-legged friends to feel safe and well care for when they are in our community,” said Gomez. “Many of the folks moving to the South Side are bringing their furry family members along with them and need access to great pet care, including spay and neuter services.”

The 2,300 square foot clinic is expected to host 5,000 free or low cost pet spay neuters in its first year of operation, ramping up to 8,000 annually in year 3 and beyond. The Brooks facility, a $1.3 million project, marks the latest public pet center opened by the City in the last several years.

In 2013, Animal Care Services partnered with Petco and the Petco Foundation to open a public adoption center and low cost veterinary clinic in Brackenridge Park.
