SAN ANTONIO, TX – The City of San Antonio and Brooks are joining forces to build a $1.3 million Spay and Neuter Clinic on the Brooks campus. The two agencies celebrated the start of construction with a ceremonial groundbreaking at the clinic’s location, 8234 City Base Landing, with a gathering of community members and stakeholders and featured remarks by San Antonio District 3 City Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran, Brooks Chairman Manuel Villa, Animal Care Services Advisory Board Chairwoman Rita Braeutigam and ACS Interim Director Xavier Urrutia. The facility will support a citywide effort to reduce the roaming cat and dog populations by making low-cost spay and neuter services available and easily accessible.

Funding for the clinic is provided by San Antonio Animal Care Services and Brooks in a 50-50 split. ACS will lease the facility for a term of 35 years for a nominal one-time rental fee of $100 plus annual expenses for common area maintenance, janitorial services and waste disposal. Brooks will maintain responsibility for the building and land. ACS will release a Request for Proposals to seek an organization to operate the clinic by providing veterinary services.

“We have demonstrated that educating the community about the benefits of spaying or neutering their pets and making these services easily accessible are key to reducing the roaming pet population,” said Councilwoman Viagran. “The Brooks clinic will be in a prime location to serve residents of District 3 and the surrounding community. This is an opportunity to build responsible pet ownership. I am pleased that Brooks is proving, once again, that their partnership with us is transformative and outstanding.”

The 2,280 square foot clinic will include two exam rooms, a surgery prep area with two wash tables, a surgery room with two surgery tables, and cat and dog holding rooms. It will be constructed by Henock Construction and is expected to be complete, February 2017.

“The core of our mission at Brooks is to serve as a catalyst for progressive economic development for all of San Antonio,” said Brooks Chairman Manuel Villa. “Helping address the City’s goal to reduce the number of roaming dogs and cats in the area will help build Brooks and its surrounding community. We believe having this clinic nearby is an important element in the future of this community, as more and more people find places to live, work, learn and play on Brooks.”
