Improved mobility and safety coming to I-37 in Southeast San Antonio
SAN ANTONIO, TX — September 24, 2026 —
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) celebrated the start of construction on the region’s second diverging diamond interchange (DDI) at I-37 and SL 13 (S.E. Military Drive), marking a significant investment in the growing economic development sector of southeast San Antonio.
With the turn of a shovel, TxDOT San Antonio District Engineer Charles Benavidez, State Rep. Elizabeth Campos and leaders from the Alamo Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, Bexar County, and the City of San Antonio officially kicked off the project.
“This project reflects years of collaboration among our transportation and community partners,” said Benavidez. “By improving traffic flow and reducing conflict points, this project will enhance safety, improve mobility and support the continued growth of southeast San Antonio.”
“This is a great example of strong partnerships and consensus delivering results for the people of San Antonio,” said Campos. “By working together, we’ve advanced critical transportation investments that will support the economic vitality of our community for years to come.”
The $40 million I-37 DDI project includes operational improvements along two miles of the corridor from SL 13 to Loop 410. Improvements include the construction of a DDI, a bypass ramp, a southbound frontage road, an auxiliary mainlane and shared-use paths.
“Reliable transportation infrastructure is essential to our continued success,” said Leo Gomez, president and CEO of Brooks. “These improvements will strengthen connectivity, support economic growth and help accommodate the expanding needs of the Brooks community.”
The contractor is Hunter Industries. Construction began in September 2026 and is anticipated to be complete by late 2029.
