Part of living, working, learning, playing, and staying at Brooks means upholding the ideals of the common good of our community. Our mission of promoting and developing a vibrant, sustainable community can start with donations and volunteerism, a perfect way to honor our rich heritage and vision at Brooks. With that in mind, here are 5 opportunities for you to give back to the South Side.
- Give blood – Making a blood donation is a priceless gift to share with those in your community experiencing illness, trauma, and uncertainty. Go to southtexasblood.org/coronavirus to schedule an appointment at the South Texas Blood & Tissue Center to ensure that blood is available whenever and wherever needed. And as a “thank you,” STBTC will provide free antibody testing for COVID-19 for all blood donors this summer.
- Prepare and distribute food – The San Antonio Food Bank needs volunteers. Help feed the hungry with various opportunities ranging from volunteering in their sorting room, warehouse, garden and farm areas, community kitchen, and even the off-site community kitchen at Haven for Hope. Sign up at safoodbank.org/ways-to-help/give-time.
- Delivering food – You can also go to mowsatx.org/coronavirus to donate to Meals on Wheels or call 210-735-5115 and press 4 to help deliver meals to over 5,000 homebound senior citizens. Also needed: pet food donations and cloth or disposable masks.
- Donate to Educational Causes – One of San Antonio Independent School District’s most pressing issues is securing both devices and hotspots to ensure that all students can connect to their teachers, classmates, and school resources during virtual learning. Donate to the SAISD Foundation’s #ConnectCampaign and help close the digital divide.
- You can also donate to the Boys & Girls Clubs of San Antonio, who are working hard to continue their efforts in serving the community during COVID-19.
- Bring relief to our essential frontline workers – DONATE FOOD! Whether it’s pizza or donuts, a full stomach is a happy stomach. Contact your local hospital for more information regarding food donations. For Baptist Health System, email BHScommandcenter@baptisthealthsystem.com or call 210-297-7601.
Recognizing the needs of our community preserves everything great about Brooks and takes it to even greater heights. Lending a neighborly hand, especially in times like these, is all part of having a vision, and heart, as BIG as Texas.
