Congratulations on your new furry friend!
Whether this is your first dog or cat or just one of an ever-growing pack, there’s a lot to know about how to take care of the new addition to your family. If you live in the Brooks area in South San Antonio, you’re in luck — everything you need to make your new pet the happiest little guy around is right in your neighborhood.
Healthy pets are happy pets
With a goal to reduce the roaming pet population in the area, Brooks and the San Antonio Animal Care Services opened the Brooks Spay and Neuter Clinic in 2017 to provide low-cost veterinary services. Operated by the San Antonio Humane Society, the 2,280-square-foot facility cost $1.3 million to build and is located at 8034 City Base Landing.
At the clinic, you can bring your dog or cat in for all the services it needs to be in tip-top shape, including:
- Spay or neuter
- Vaccinations
- Flea prevention
- Heartworm prevention
Scheduling an appointment to have your dog or cat spayed or neutered is easy, but an appointment is required to take advantage of this service. Drop-off is at 7:30 am and the cost for dogs ranges from $47-$123. The Wellness Clinic, where your new pet can get caught up on all the prevention he or she needs, takes patients on a first-come, first-served basis Tuesday-Friday 11:00 am to 1:00 pm and Saturdays from 9:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Treats, toys, and training
Once you’ve got your new friend taken care of at the vet, you’ll likely want to make sure it knows its basic commands. The Petco at Brooks offers dog training classes that use treats and praise for positive reinforcement. They offer beginner through advanced classes, so feel free to bring your older pups along for a refresher course.
While you’re at Petco, you can pick up all the other supplies your pet will need, such as:
- Food and treats
- Bowls, collar, leash, and other supplies
- Toys
- Crates, puppy pads, and other training tools
Don’t forget to book your dog or cat for a spa day too. Petco’s grooming services include free consultations and online booking and are completed by certified stylists with veterinarian-approved safety standards.
Fresh air for Fido
If you live or work at Brooks, you’re probably familiar with The Greenline, the award-winning 43-acre linear park that opened in 2018. For those who haven’t visited yet, you’re in for a treat. The Greenline is the perfect place to take your new dog to get some exercise and to smell all the smells while you soak in the scenery on the 1.5 miles of walking trails.
Fitness stations, play structures, rentable pavilions, Wi-Fi, ping pong and foosball tables, picnic tables, and public art make The Greenline a gorgeous spot to take the whole family for an evening walk or a Saturday afternoon picnic.
Pets welcome
If you don’t live at Brooks yet, but are considering moving to the area with a dog or cat, no fear — all of the apartment complexes at Brooks are pet-friendly, and several have designated dog parks. The Kennedy has two dog parks with watering stations, while The Anderson at Brooks offers large and small breed dog parks, as well as dog wash facilities.
