The Greenline Extension connects the 43-acre greenspace to the Mission Reach and River Walk

Brooks now connects directly to the San Antonio River thanks to a partnership with Bexar County and the San Antonio River Authority. Located at the southern end of The Greenline, the extension is nearly a quarter mile at approximately 1,200-feet long, connecting to existing walking trails along the San Antonio River at Mission Reach. The extension features a 10-foot-wide mixed-use pathway, a 43-foot-long tunnel underneath the Union Pacific Railroad line, landscaping, drainage structures, and shaded congregation areas.

“Public space is critical for community success. Our South side community deserves the opportunity to enjoy the natural beauty of our county and Brooks continues to deliver on the vision we had for this area -to be an economic driver that brings people, companies and jobs to the South side,” said Nelson W. Wolff, Bexar County Judge. “The connection is a key amenity and another incentive to work, live, and play at Brooks.

”The connection starts at the edge of Brooks’ campus on Old Corpus Christi Road and extends to the Acequia Trail. At this spot, there are public restrooms, a water fountain, parking path connection, and a security station. The San Juan Mission is only an 11-minute bike ride to the South, and Hot Wells is a 15-minute bike ride to the North.

“We are reconnecting areas of our city by creating an inviting, shared public space for all to use,” said Jim Campbell, Chairman of the Brooks Board of Directors and Vice Chairman of the San Antonio River Authority Board. “When people gather and enjoy these amenities, we hope that stewardship of place and community trust is built. Our goal is to create spaces that attract diversity, enhance the resiliency of neighborhoods, and deliver economic value in ways that benefit the community and small businesses.”

The Greenline Park opened in 2018 on the Brooks campus. The 43-acre linear park includes 1.5 miles of illuminated hike, bike and jogging trails, a fitness station, play structure, food truck court, one large and three small pavilions, two restroom buildings, areas for outdoor games, Wi-Fi access, six plazas and a fully stocked pond.

With 43-acres of green space, The Greenline serves as the place to be for members of the community to bike, walk their dogs, barbecue, and attend events hosted in the park. Connecting The Greenline to downtown provides South side residents more opportunities to enjoy San Antonio’s attractions, while providing opportunity and access to the Brooks region.

Brooks is designated as one of SA Tomorrow’s Regional Activity Centers due to its high concentration of people and jobs in a mixed-use environment. Aligning with Brooks’ mission to promote and develop a dynamic, sustainable, and inclusive community, increasing walkability and alternative transit options on
the South side will create a healthy and vibrant community. The Greenline extension gives Brooks convenient access to more than 15 miles of walking, jogging and biking trails stretching from the historic missions through downtown, The Pearl and up to Brackenridge Park and the Museum Reach of the San Antonio River Walk.
