Outback Steakhouse could be the next tenant to move into Brooks. The growing Southeast Side mixed-used community has welcomed a list of new businesses in recent years, ranging from national brands to local names, like La Gloria, and now Australian flair could be on the menu.

Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filings show Outback is planning a $1.7 million restaurant at 2814 S.E. Military Drive. The roughly 5,000-square-foot restaurant is expected to have a construction timeline of November 7, 2022 to June 5, 2023. As with all TDLR filings, details are subject to change, but the plans are cohesive with the brands previously announced expansion framework.

According to a May 9 news release, the Tampa-based chain’s expansion of 75 to 100 additional restaurants in the U.S. will feature smaller restaurants. Locations are typically 6,000 square-feet, but the new styles are smaller by a thousand square-feet, according to the release.

“This new restaurant design features the Aussie spirit of Outback from the moment you arrive at the restaurant with a warm and welcoming dining room while also allowing us to optimize Outback’s strong to-go and delivery channels,” Brett Patterson, president of Outback Steakhouse, says in the release. “The smaller size also allows us to bring restaurants to areas where larger units may not have been possible.”

Neither Outback nor Brooks was immediately available to comment on the future of the restaurant in the community.

If the Brooks Outback comes to fruition, it would be the fourth location in the San Antonio area. It would join other recent additions, like the upcoming La Gloria, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse, and Black Bear Diner.
